FIBER ARTS EDUCATION

Join Fellow Enthusiasts for a Day of Loving Fiber!  

Choose from ONE of these classes taught by Palomar Handweavers and Spinners Guild members. 

Each class will be held on Saturdays from 10:00am - 4:00pm on the Museum Grounds.  Bring your bag lunch and enjoy the beautiful grounds and fiber art collections.

REGISTER FOR MARCH CLASSES 

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

RIGID HEDDLE WEAVING

Learn to create woven cloth on a rigid heddle loom. These skills can be employed to produce lovely textiles such as scarves, towels and table runners. In the class you will weave on a rigid heddle loom to create a 5 inch wide swath of fabric that can be used as a coaster. You will select yarn, prepare the loom and practice several different weaving techniques. A handout will be provided. All supplies (loom, yarn, etc.) are included at no additional cost, just bring your creative ideas!

Class size: 8 students, maximum - ages 18 and up

BEGINNING SPINNING

Learn about fiber and how to make your own yarn using a variety of methods to include spinning on a wheel. This class is meant for beginners and those who might want to refresh their skills. Ashford Spinning Wheels will be provided. fiber is included at no additional cost.

Class size: 6 students maximum - ages 18 and up

BAND WEAVING WITH AN INKLE LOOM

Learn to create a decorative band that may be used for purse handles, camera bag straps, guitar straps, hat bands and key fobs. Using an Inkle loom, you will wind on yarn and weave a band in your choice of colors. A handout will be provided. All supplies (loom, yarn, etc.) are included at no additional cost.

Class size: 6 students maximum -  ages 18 and up

BOBBIN LACE

Learn the basics of lace making with this Torchon style lace class. You will weave a small bookmark of sample stitches using prethreaded bobbins and a printed pattern. All materials are provided at no additional cost.

Class size: 4 students maximum, ages 18 and up

BEGINNING KNITTING

This class is for students who do not know how to knit and want to learn the basic skills of casting on, knit stitch and binding off.  You will come away with a finished dishcloth. 

Class size: 4 students maximum, ages 18 and up

ARTFUL WET FELTING

Half day, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM 

Class size: 6 students maximum -  ages 18 and up                       

Location: Zuest Family Spinners' Cottage

Create an artful piece of cloth from merino wool roving and assorted embellishments using the
technique of wet felting. You will wet felt a 12 x 18 inch rectangle with the colors and design of
your choice. The piece will felt to an approximate size of 10 x 16 inches. Your finished piece
can be made into a number of items: envelope purse of cell phone holder, framed picture,
journal cover, bookmarks, coasters, etc. Students cannot have soap or wool sensitivities as
your hands will be touching wool and working with soap.

COTTON SPINNING

Class size: 8 students maximum -  ages 18 and up                       

Location: Zuest Family Spinners' Cottage

Learn all about cotton and cotton spinning. You will have an opportunity to process cotton
from bolls and seeds creating spinnable cotton (punI) with hand carders. You will learn to long
draw the cotton fibers and spin cotton yarn using a traditional tahkli.

NEEDLE FELTING

Class size: 6 students maximum -  ages 18 and up                       

Location: Zuest Family Spinners' Cottage

Create a felted 3D animal or object from colored wool. The wool is felted using a stabbing method with needles specific to needle felting. Let your imagination run wild as you choose your colors and learn to provide detail to your piece.
